About Neum
Geographic position of Neum
|
This
town in the picturesque bay on southern coast of the eastern Adriatic, at
the otskirts of Dubrovnik, at the very important cross-roads of
civilisations, has been the interest area of local and global significance
from time immemorial.
Today's municipality of Neum with its 224 sq.km. and 5000 inhabitants, mostly Croat Catholics, occupies some 20 km. Of the cosat and the adjacent karst valleys.
The mediterranean climate with the specific flora and fauna spreads throughout the area enabling the population to grow olives, figs and vine. |
|
The sea abounds in all kinds
of fish and sea-shells, while higher up in the hills there are fine game and
birds for the hunters. Typical farm animals are sheep, goats and cattle.
Important places, beside the town of Neum itself, are Hutovo, Hrasno and
Gradac, Catholic parishes of the diocese of Trebinje.
To visitors, beside the hotels and warm and clear sea, we recommend the
Queen of Peace shrine and the Gallery of Hrasno, St.Johns church,
Ethnological Museum, collection of stone monuments at Hutovo, St.Annc s
church at Gradac (17th c.) as well as number of small and large medieval
tombstone necropolises, churches, crosses, mounds and ruins, and last but
not least the CRNULJA cave in Popovo polje with the longest krast
underground stream in Europe, the river of Trebišnjica. The neighbouring Ston and Klek, with their identity drawing from the Dubrovnik tradition, HUTOVO BLATO with the Europec s largest wading birds preserve , add to the tourist picture of Neum which is quite impressive.
